Weather Update
This is a quick update on the weather affecting the southern United States, specifically Florida. At Jaguar Fueling Services we strive to keep our clients up to date as they plan to respond to events like these.
As it stands, all forecast models suggest that Hurricane Dorian could potentially grow to become a Category 4 event with winds reaching 130mph by as early as Sunday morning. This, according to the National Hurricane Center. As of approximately 11:00 this morning Dorian is described as a Category1 storm with winds at 85mph and located approximately 215 miles north by northwest of San Juan, Peurto Rico, with a northwest trajectory. The storm appears to be moving at 13mph.
As of 11 a.m., Dorian remained a Category 1 storm with winds continuing to swirl at 85 mph. It was 220 miles north-northwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico, moving northwest at 13 mph. The hurricane center’s next complete advisory will be at 5 p.m.
According to meteorologists, the storm is moving over warm water with low vertical shear. These conditions are prime for strengthening the storm, and it is expected that the storm will likely strengthen to a Category 3 event by Friday. Tracking models indicate that the storm will peak in intensity as it makes landfall south of Cape Canaveral on Monday. Of course, it is still too soon pinpoint the actual location of landfall we do know that the likelihood of storm surges on Florida’s east coast increase with each passing moment.
Wednesdays models indicate that Dorian has slowed and that the center of the storm will hit land in the early hours of the day on Monday. Some suggest that it could very well be a Category 2 storm as it moves over the Orlando area.
The overnight forecast models showed the storm slowing somewhat, with the center now hitting land early morning Monday. By early Tuesday morning, it could still be a Category 2 hurricane as it moves over the Orlando area.
In expectation of the storm, Florida Governor, Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency:
“Today, I am declaring a state of emergency to ensure Florida is fully prepared for Hurricane Dorian,” DeSantis said. “It’s important for Floridians on the East Coast to monitor this storm closely. Every Florida resident should have seven days of supplies, including food, water and medicine, and should have a plan in case of disaster. I will continue to monitor Hurricane Dorian closely with emergency management officials. The state stands ready to support all counties along the coast as they prepare.”
